East Anglian Tree and Landscape Officers Group
Summer visit to Hylands House and Anglia Ruskin University – Tuesday July 15th 2008.

Following its successful spring seminar, ‘Influence of Affluence’, EATaLOG invites its members on a summer visit to two iconic, if controversial, Essex venues. Hylands House is a stunning Grade II* listed property, spectacularly restored to its former glory situated in 574 acres of historic landscaped parkland that includes ancient woodland, grassland, lakes, ponds, pleasure garden and One World garden. The highly controversial Lottery funded restoration of its Repton Landscape resulted however in the removal of many mature trees.

A guided walk round the campus will be lead by Armel Mourge, the  Landscape Architect with Gillespies and Project Manager for the campus 'master plan' being implemented over next 15 years.

Afternoon tea and coffee will be will be served on campus at the University café within the Michael Ashcroft Building, a modern building graced by  riverside views…

Click Here to download leaflet on visiting Hylands House.

Sue Ireland (Director of Open Spaces for the Corporation of the City of London) lead on the original lottery bid and will talk through its vision…together with the sometimes dramatic landscape change needed to achieve it.

Members will then be taken around the grounds to observe the restoration and newly made One World Garden. Web address http://www.chelmsford.gov.uk/index .cfm?articleid=6155

Buffet lunch and refreshments will be provided free of charge for EATaLOG members.

After lunch, members will visit nearby Anglia Ruskin University to review its new riverside campus recently built on former industrial ‘brownfield’. Rivermead Campus is located on the bank of the River Chelmer and is only ten minutes walk from the shops and transport links in the centre of Chelmsford.

To get there…

Hylands Estate is located near Chelmsford, Essex. Take junction 28 from the M25, onto the A12. Exit the A12 at junction 15 and follow the signposts for Chelmsford and Harlow onto the A414, London Road. The entrances for Hylands House and Park are clearly signposted from this road. At the top of the ‘Visitor Information’ Hylands website page there is a link allowing you to download a ‘Visiting Hylands’ leaflet, which includes a map showing the roads in the area surrounding the estate.
